The Silver Sands of Morar

Sunday 16th September

After a very long day on the road yesterday (not helped by the M6 being shut, resulting in long delays) we arrived for our week in Morar on the Scottish West Coast.  Today we had a much more leisurely day, and here are a couple of photos from a drive along the coast road and then a few more from our afternoon stroll on the Silver Sands of Morar :-)

  1. Have a great time up there! I'm thinking of starting a Challenge from Morar. Is there a quick way round to Scamadale? Also my Anquet map seems to show a cycle track between the road and the railway! Really?

    1. Hi Martin,

There certainly didn't appear to be any obvious shortcut to Scamadale. Crossing the Blar na Caillich Buidhe looked quite unpleasant as it is a large flat marshy area!

I had a look for the cycle path that you mention and according to the blue cycle route signposts, the signposted cycle route is along the old coast road (the B8008). The new A830 south from Morar doesn't seem to have a cycle path alongside it. How old is your Anquet map? I believe the new road is only a few years old.

I have a couple of small books on walks from Mallaig, Morar and Arisaig so you are welcome to borrow these if they would be any use in choosing a route out of Morar.

  2. Thanks Alistair, my Anquet is very old, so I suspect the 'cycle track' is the route of the new road. I suppose I could start the challenge with a stroll down the old road...

    1. There are good views from the old road, especially across to Eigg and Rum. If the tide is right you could even walk some of the way along the beach too...

  3. That's maybe not a bad option then. I was planning to start with Markus from Arisaig, but Arisaig seems to have been abandoned as a start point this time...
